McGuigan Wines Cellar Door

McGuigan Wines runs its cellar door out of Pavilion C at Roche Estate on Broke Road in Pokolbin, in the middle of the Hunter Valley's main wine strip about two hours north of Sydney. It is one of the big, easygoing doors that makes a sensible first stop on a Pokolbin run, and it is listed as dog-friendly, with well-behaved leashed dogs able to join you while you taste.

Plan around the outdoors: dogs are welcome on the grounds and terrace areas, and staff are generally accommodating, but the indoor tasting room gets busy, so check with them on the day about where you can settle. Keep your dog on a standard leash and under control so it stays clear of other guests and the vineyard wildlife. Bring a collapsible water bowl because dog facilities are not a given, and the flat open grounds give a dog room to relax rather than sit jammed against other tables.

The tasting

The range is broad and approachable, from full-flavoured reds and whites to accessible sparkling, with the Black Label line the headline draw. Tasting experiences run from walk-in flights to hosted sessions, and cheese and chocolate pairings are often on the menu. Walk-ins are welcome and bookings are recommended, particularly for weekends and larger groups.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door is at Pavilion C, Roche Estate, 2144 Broke Road, open daily from 10am to 5pm, closing only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. There is a large sealed car park on site with flat access to the tasting areas, which makes arrival with a dog straightforward.

Pair it with

As a popular stop it fills from late morning on weekends, so arrive at opening for the calmest stretch or come mid-week.
