Mortimers Wines runs its cellar door from the historic 1866 March schoolhouse on Burrendong Way, a short drive from central Orange. It is a small, family-owned cool-climate producer, and one of the more dog-welcoming cellar doors in the region, dogs are allowed inside the schoolhouse as well as out.

The dog setup. Unusually for a cellar door, well-behaved dogs are generally welcome inside the historic tasting room, often parked by the fireplace in winter, as well as in the garden courtyard and across the grounds. Keep your dog leashed and settled around other guests. Bring your own water bowl, the setup is relaxed rather than fully kitted out for dogs.

Known for. Cool-climate shiraz, cabernet and chardonnay, local cheese platters, and live music on select afternoons in a characterful old-schoolhouse setting.

Getting there. 780 Burrendong Way, a short drive from town. On-site parking.

Nearby with the dogs. Cook Park in central Orange is a good on-lead stroll, and there are dog-friendly cafes along Summer St to round out the day.

Best as a relaxed cool-weather stop when the indoor fireside option comes into its own. Good for a calm dog that settles quietly indoors.
