Bloomfield Reserve is a large off-leash reserve at 21 Bloomfield Rd, on the southern edge of Orange. It is the area's big open-nature option, around 21 hectares of trees and trails with creek and dam access, so it reads more like a bush walk than a suburban dog run. The one thing to know up front: it is unfenced.

The rules. Off-leash 24/7, but only part of the reserve is the designated off-leash zone, so follow the signage. It is unfenced and open to internal roads, so reliable recall is essential. Important neighbour note: dogs are banned at the adjoining Gosling Creek Reserve to protect birdlife, do not stray across the boundary.

Unfenced and crossed by internal roads. If your dog's recall is shaky or it bolts after wildlife, keep it on a long lead and well clear of the road edges.

What's there. Extensive walking trails and creek and dam swimming spots, a genuine rarity for dogs in Orange. Parking within the reserve. Facilities are limited, no public toilets in the dog zone.

The water. Creek and dam access make it a swimming option in warmer months; check the water looks clean before letting a dog in.

Getting there. Off Bloomfield Rd, south of the city centre near Huntley Rd. Car is the practical way in.

Best early morning or late afternoon when locals are about. Good for high-energy dogs with solid recall; not the spot for a bolter or a dog that needs a fence.
