Bottle Shock

Bottle Shock is a cellar door and wine bar in the main street of Gumeracha, in the northern Adelaide Hills, built around gamified blind tasting flights. For dog owners the essentials are good: dogs are welcome in the outdoor verandah and courtyard areas on leash, with water bowls usually on hand, and the format means a tasting here works as an hour of sitting still with the dog at your feet.

Dogs stay on leash in the outdoor areas, which are comfortable and shaded, and they should not approach other guests' tables. The indoor bar is generally off limits except for service dogs, though on a quiet day staff sometimes allow indoor access if asked. Assume outdoors only unless told otherwise, and check ahead if the weather is a problem.

Pepsi: blind tasting means nobody knows if the dog is judging the wine too. Verandah seat, water bowl, a flight each, and my human stops asking which winery we are at.

Worth knowing

The signature is the blind tasting flight, which strips off brand bias and makes the wine education easy rather than intimidating, with share plates to match. The list pours Adelaide Hills producers plus wines from Unico Zelo and spirits from Applewood Distillery, and the by-the-glass range is one of the larger ones in the country. Hours are narrow: open Monday and Friday through Sunday, 12pm to 6pm, closed Tuesday to Thursday, so plan the Hills run around those days. Bookings are worth making for weekends.

Getting there and parking

The address is 24 Victoria Street, Gumeracha, in the township itself, with street parking directly out front. Gumeracha is about 40 minutes from Adelaide via the north-eastern suburbs and Gorge Road, or 30 minutes via Lobethal Road for the scenic run.
