Shared with horse riders, so dogs must stay leashed and under control.
The Willow Vale Recreational Trail is 6.3 km of proper bush walking through the reserves off Ruffles Road in the northern Gold Coast hinterland, out and back with a steady climb, and dogs are welcome on lead the whole way.
The walk. The route follows fire management trails and gravel paths through tallowwood, grey gum and pink bloodwood forest, moderate going with one sustained uphill stretch, about two hours return. This is a natural reserve rather than a groomed park, so the lower sections turn muddy after heavy rain and the wildlife acts like it owns the place, because it does.
The rules. The City of Gold Coast manages the reserves and dogs must stay leashed and under control at all times, not least because horse riders share the trail. Stay on the marked route, some of the side trails run into private property, and carry your dog's waste bags out with you, this is a walk with no bins. Dogs are also barred from the playground areas at the trailhead reserves.

Facilities. There are none on the trail itself, no toilets and no water taps, so bring everything the two of you will drink. The trailhead at 132 Ruffles Road has basic gravel parking and a picnic table with shelter. The track entry is easy to miss: look for it directly across from the parking area, in the bush between the picnic table and the fence.
Make a day of it. At the Willow Tree Cafe in Ormeau is the natural coffee stop. Vennor Reserve Fenced Dog Park handles the off-lead zoomies afterwards, and Coomera Holiday Village at Upper Coomera is a handy dog-friendly base if you are travelling through.
When to go. Give it a few dry days after rain or the bottom sections will be bog. Winter and the shoulder months are the comfortable window, and on summer walks start early, carry extra water and expect the reptiles to be out by mid morning.
