Willow Vale Recreational Trail

The Willow Vale Recreational Trail is 6.3km of proper bush walking through the reserves off Ruffles Road in the northern Gold Coast hinterland. It runs out and back along fire management trails and gravel paths through tallowwood, grey gum and pink bloodwood forest, with a steady climb that makes it about two hours return. This is the most rewarding dog-friendly bush track in the Ormeau-Pimpama pocket, and it is a workout rather than a saunter.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome but must stay on lead and under control the whole way. The City of Gold Coast manages the reserves and the rule is not just paperwork: horse riders share the trail, and native wildlife lives here. Stay on the marked route too, because some of the side trails run onto private property, and note that dogs are barred from the playground areas at the trailhead reserves.

Max: goannas sunbake in the middle of the track through the warm months and snakes do the same. Keep the lead short, let them hold their ground, and walk around.

Water and hazards

There are no facilities on the trail itself: no toilets, no water taps and no bins, so bring everything the two of you will drink and carry your dog's waste bags back out. The surface is mostly gravel and fire trail earth, but the lower sections turn muddy after heavy rain and the incline can be slippery with loose gravel. Goannas and snakes use the track to warm up, especially from mid morning in summer, so keep your dog close and give any reptile a wide berth.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead is at 132 Ruffles Road, Willow Vale, about 15 to 20 minutes west of Ormeau and Pimpama. Parking is a basic gravel bay with a sheltered picnic table, and the track entry is easy to miss: it sits directly across from the parking area, in the bush between the picnic table and the fence. There is no public transport out here, so drive.

When to go

Give it a few dry days after rain or the bottom sections will be bog, and winter and the shoulder months are the comfortable window. In summer, start early, carry extra water and expect the reptiles to be out by mid morning. Afterwards, the coffee stop is At the Willow Tree Cafe in Ormeau, and the fenced zoomies at Vennor Reserve Fenced Dog Park are close by.
