Lookout Archerfield Wetland

Lookout Archerfield Wetland in Willawong is a short, flat walk built around open wetland views and birdlife, part of the wider Archerfield Wetlands parkland along Oxley Creek in Brisbane's south-west. It is the sort of quiet suburban loop where the biggest decision is how long to linger on a bench watching the water.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome but must stay on leash at all times; this is a restored wetland ecosystem with nesting waterbirds, so stick to the designated paths rather than letting your dog range off-track. Carry waste bags and take them out with you.

The walk

The lookout loop runs about two and a half kilometres return on compacted gravel and paved paths, mostly flat and easy underfoot, taking around half an hour at a stroll with a dog. Follow the wider Archerfield Wetlands Discovery Trail through the 150-hectare parkland if you want to stretch it to nearly seven kilometres return, passing open grassland, restored freshwater wetlands and eucalypt forest along Blunder Creek. Benches along the way make it easy to pause, and the birdlife is the main event, with well over a hundred species recorded across the site.

Max: go early morning for the birds and cool paws. The open floodplain sections have almost no shade, and midday sun on the gravel tracks is rough on dogs in summer.

Water and hazards

Bring your own water; drinking stations near the district park end cover the trailhead but not the whole loop. Sections of path hold water and turn muddy after rain, so time your visit after wet weather, and expect mosquitoes near the ponds at dusk. Snakes are a possibility in warm months around the creek corridors, so keep the lead short in the grassy sections.

Getting there and parking

There is a large free car park at the trailhead off Bowhill Road in Willawong, with toilets, a playground and basketball courts at the start of the walk. The site sits close to Acacia Ridge and Coopers Plains, and the open 24-hour access means early starts are no problem.
