Englefield Road Park's fenced dog area is a 24 hour off-leash enclosure in Oxley, split into a large-dog section and a smaller fenced agility area next door, with shade trees, water and a double-gated entry that keeps escapes to a minimum.

The rules. Dogs must be on-leash until you are through both gates of the double-gated entry. Keep voice control of your dog at all times and be ready to leash up if things get boisterous. Declared dangerous dogs and restricted breeds are not permitted in the off-leash area. Pick up after your dog; bring your own bags as a backup in case the dispensers run dry.

What's there. The large fenced field has mature shade trees, bench seating and dog water bowls. Basic agility equipment is scattered through the grounds, and waste bins are placed around the park so you are never far from one.

Getting there. The park sits just off the Ipswich Motorway on Englefield Road, with free street parking along Englefield Road and Mabel Street. Oxley train station is about a 1.2 km walk away, roughly 15 minutes on foot, if you are coming by rail.

Watch-outs. Weekday mornings from 6.30am to 8.30am and weekday evenings from 4.30pm to 6pm draw the biggest crowds. If your dog is reactive or easily overwhelmed, aim for mid-morning to early afternoon instead.

Check both gates are latched before you unclip the lead. The double-gate setup only works if the first one is shut before you open the second.

Go early or late for a quiet run, and stick to the mid-morning lull if your dog needs space from the crowd.
