Anstey Hill Recreation Park Gate 6

Anstey Hill Recreation Park Gate 6 is the trailhead for the Newmans Nursery Ruins Walk in Vista, about 25 to 30 minutes northeast of the Adelaide CBD. The draw is fast access into steep eucalypt woodland and the historic nursery ruins, with koalas and kangaroos spotted often enough to be a real part of the walk rather than a lottery.

The walk

Gate 6 links directly to the Newmans Nursery trail and connects on to broader routes including the Boundary Walk. Terrain runs from well-maintained gravel and paved sections near the entrance to steep, narrow bush tracks higher up, and several interconnecting tracks let you lengthen or shorten the loop depending on how much uphill you want. Trailhead signage near the carpark helps you pick a route before setting out.

Leash status

Dogs stay on a leash no longer than 2 metres at all times. This is a wildlife sanctuary, so stick to designated trails and keep your dog away from the native birds and mammals; the kangaroos and koalas are exactly why the rule is enforced.

Water and pack-out

There are no bins anywhere in the park, so everything including dog waste comes out with you. Benches are limited along the main paths, and water is not provided, so carry enough for both of you, especially on the steeper sections.

Hazards

Trails turn muddy after rain, and the park can close entirely on declared high fire danger days, so check conditions before driving out.

Getting there

A small gravel carpark sits directly off North East Road near the Rosedale Avenue intersection, and it fills quickly on weekends. Overflow is sometimes available on nearby residential streets, but check signage before leaving the car. Adelaide Metro buses run along North East Road with stops within walking distance.

Max: the ruins get all the attention, but the higher loop is where the kangaroos graze at dawn. Take the uphill detour for the better wildlife moment and fewer people underfoot.
