Anstey Hill Recreation Park Gate 6

Anstey Hill Recreation Park Gate 6 is the trailhead for the Newmans Nursery Ruins Walk in Vista, roughly 25 to 30 minutes northeast of Adelaide CBD. The drawcard is fast access to the historic nursery ruins through steep Eucalyptus woodland, with koalas and kangaroos frequently spotted along the way.

The walk. Gate 6 links directly to the Newmans Nursery trail and connects to broader routes including the Boundary Walk. Terrain ranges from well-maintained gravel and paved sections near the entrance to steep, narrow bush tracks higher up. Several interconnecting tracks let you lengthen or shorten your loop depending on fitness and how much uphill you want. Trailhead signage near the carpark helps you pick a route before setting out.

Leash and wildlife. Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than 2 metres at all times. This is a wildlife sanctuary, so stick to designated trails and keep your dog from harassing native birds and mammals. The kangaroos and koalas here are the reason the leash rule is strictly enforced.

Getting there. A small gravel carpark sits directly off North East Road near the Rosedale Avenue intersection. It fills quickly on weekends. Overflow is sometimes available on nearby residential streets, but check local signage before leaving the car. Adelaide Metro buses run along North East Road with stops within walking distance.

What to pack. No bins are provided anywhere in the park. You carry out everything, including dog waste. Limited benches sit along the main paths, so bring water for both you and your dog, especially on the steeper sections.

Hazards. Trails turn muddy after rain. On declared high fire danger days the park may be closed entirely, so check current conditions before driving out.

When to go. Early mornings on weekdays are the quietest and give you the best chance of spotting koalas and kangaroos. Avoid weekend mornings between 8:00 and 11:00 AM when families and walking groups converge on the ruins. To dodge the worst of the crowds at any time, skip the main ruin path and head straight for the higher trail loop.
