Gate 18 Anstey Hill Recreation Park

Gate 18 opens the quieter eastern side of Anstey Hill Recreation Park from off Ninth Avenue in Houghton, northeast of Adelaide. It is the rustic entry into a steep bushland reserve with panoramic city views, drawing a fraction of the crowds that use the main Perseverance Road entrance, and dogs are welcome on lead.

The walk

Expect natural bushland, steep grades and unsealed trails: this is hill country, not a flat loop, and the quieter eastern tracks from this gate connect to loops such as the Silver Mine Loop and Bursaria Loop. Stay on designated walking trails to protect the habitat and keep wildlife encounters predictable.

Leash status

Dogs must be on a lead of no more than 2 metres at all times, with no off-leash areas anywhere in the park. Some sections are prohibited to dogs entirely and marked on the official map at parks.sa.gov.au, so check your route before committing.

Water and hazards

There is no drinking water and no toilet at Gate 18, and no bins anywhere in the park, so carry everything in and pack all waste out. Kangaroos move through at dawn and dusk and koalas are present, so keep the dog close near wildlife. The terrain is steep and exposed and the hills hold heat, which makes midday in warmer months a genuine heat-exhaustion risk for dogs.

Max: two-metre leash rule, no bins, no water, and kangaroos at dawn and dusk. Pack the waste bag before you leave the car and clip on before the gate.

Getting there and parking

Parking is limited street and pull-in space near the gate, best approached from North East Road via Range Road South. Public transport is effectively impractical; the nearest bus stops sit on North East Road in the Tea Tree Gully area, leaving a long, steep walk.

When to go

Mid-week mornings and late weekday afternoons are the calmest and coolest windows, while weekend mornings are busiest. Vehicle gates generally open 6:30am to 7pm, extending to 9pm in daylight saving.
