Gate 18 Anstey Hill Recreation Park

Gate 18 sits off Ninth Avenue in Houghton, opening onto the eastern side of Anstey Hill Recreation Park. It is the quieter, more rustic entry point into a steep bushland reserve that rewards you with panoramic city views, and the reason to make the trip is simple: solid, leashed hill hiking through genuine native habitat with a fraction of the crowds the main Perseverance Road entrance draws.

The walk. Expect natural bushland with steep grades and unsealed trails. This is hill country, not a flat loop, so condition matters for both ends of the lead. Stick to designated walking trails to protect the native habitat and keep wildlife encounters manageable.

Leash status. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash no longer than 2 metres at all times. No off-leash areas, no exceptions. Some sections of the broader park are prohibited to dogs entirely and marked on the official map at parks.sa.gov.au, so check before you commit to a route.

Water. None available at Gate 18. No drinking water fountains, no toilets. Carry everything you and your dog need for the duration, and bring your own waste bags. There are no bins in the park, so all waste goes home with you.

Hazards. The terrain is steep and exposed, and the park gets genuinely hot. Kangaroos are common in the early morning and late evening, and koalas are present throughout. Keep your dog close and leashed near wildlife at all times.

Getting there. Unsealed, limited street and pull-in parking near the gate on Ninth Avenue. Approached best from North East Road via Range Road South. Public transport is effectively impractical: the closest bus stops are on North East Road in the Tea Tree Gully area, leaving a long, steep walk to the gate.

When to go. Mid-week mornings or late weekday afternoons are the calmest windows and also the smartest call for temperature, given the heat those hills can hold. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the busiest periods. Avoid the middle of the day in warmer months entirely, the exposure and grade are a genuine heat-exhaustion risk for dogs.
