What visitors mention
Glenfern Valley Bushlands is a 40-hectare community-managed reserve on Glenfern Road, Upwey, mixing native eucalyptus forest, open grassy areas and a creek. It is a leash-only walk, which makes it a reliable, low-drama option rather than an off-leash destination.
The rules. Dogs must stay on-leash for the entire reserve. The bushland borders the Dandenong Ranges National Park, where dogs are not permitted at all, so watch trail markers near the boundary and do not drift across it. Carry bags out with you or use the on-site bins.
What's there. Well-marked tracks range from easy gravel loops to steeper dirt sections, with picnic tables and benches along the way. There are no public toilets on site, so plan accordingly.
Getting there. Parking is in gravel bays along Glenfern Road. It is about a ten-minute drive from Ferntree Gully or Tecoma. Upwey station is the nearest train stop, but it is a substantial walk from there, so a car or rideshare is the practical option.
Nearby with the dogs. Upwey Village has a handful of cafes with dog-friendly outdoor seating along Main Street. Tecoma and Ferntree Gully both have pet-friendly stay options if you are making a weekend of the Dandenongs.

Weekday mornings are quietest. Saturdays get busy with other walkers, and the tracks turn muddy after rain, so proper footwear helps.
