Mount Taylor Reserve gate

Mount Taylor Reserve is a 300-hectare protected area straddling Kambah in Tuggeranong and Torrens/Pearce in Woden, offering steep fire-trail climbs to an 856-metre summit with 360-degree views across southern Canberra. The single defining fact: this is a strenuous, largely unshaded ascent, so leave it for cool days.

The walk. Roughly 3.8km on well-defined fire-trail style paths that climb steadily to the summit. The grade is steep throughout on fire-trail management track.

Leash status. Dogs are permitted but must be on-leash at all times on every track and trail within the reserve. They are restricted to established trails and not allowed off-trail into the bushland, which protects local wildlife and rare plant species.

Water. There is no on-trail water source. Carry enough for yourself and your dog, especially given the exposure and climb.

Hazards. The climb is steep and almost entirely unshaded, making heat exhaustion a real risk on warm days. Avoid hot weather entirely. Early morning or late afternoon is the practical window.

Getting there. Unsealed car park off Sulwood Drive, near the Manheim Street intersection in Kambah, about 1.8km from the Tuggeranong Parkway. From the car park it is roughly a 400-metre walk along an access road to reach the mountain base. Several ACTION bus routes run along Sulwood Drive and Athllon Drive for walking access.

Nearby with the dogs. Kambah has a few cafe options for a post-walk coffee: Mannheim Cafe near the Manheim Street entrance, Café Blanco, and On the Grind Canberra. Basic picnic tables sit near the Waldock Street entrance on the Chifley side if you prefer to eat at the reserve.

When to go. Aim for sunrise or sunset for the best views and cooler temperatures. Weekday mid-morning is the quietest window if your dog prefers space. Weekends and early mornings draw the heaviest foot traffic. Skip it entirely on hot days.
