The Needles Walk

The Needles is a quick, steep drop from the edge of Engadine to the Woronora River, where a causeway splits shallow splashing water from deeper swimming holes. Dogs are allowed on a leash, which Sutherland Shire Council requires on this route.

The walk

You start on Waterboard Road, a steep concrete fire trail, then switch to uneven, rocky bush tracks down to the water. Shoes with grip help on the way back up.

The access and swimming hole on the Engadine side sit outside the national park. The bushland further along is national park, where dogs are not allowed.

Water and shade

The river is the draw, with shallow water on one side of the causeway and deeper pools on the other. There are no taps, so bring drinking water for the dog.

There are no bins at the parking area or on the track, so carry everything out. Parking is on the street near Mount Carmel Place and Woronora Road, by the gate.

Summer is the season for it, with heavy canopy shade at the bottom. The climb out suits fit dogs.
