Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail

Wide, flat and sealed, the path along the Seaholme foreshore is part of the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail, with open views across Port Phillip Bay to the Melbourne skyline. This stretch is sometimes listed as the Seaholme Foreshore Trail, and dogs are welcome on it as long as they stay on a lead.

Leads on the path

Hobsons Bay City Council requires dogs on lead along the shared coastal path unless signs say otherwise. The lead also protects the shorebirds that use this coast.

Some nearby bathing beaches have summer restrictions for dogs, so read the signs before you step onto the sand.

The walk

You share the concrete path with joggers and bikes, and it is almost completely exposed, with very little shade anywhere along the water. Bins sit along the trail, but bring your own bags.

There are drinking fountains near the foreshore and neighbouring reserves such as P.A. Burns Reserve, though a bottle and bowl help on the longer stretches.

Getting started

WG Cresser Reserve in Seaholme has parking, open lawn and a playground, and makes an easy starting point.

Pepsi: Save the off-lead fun for the end. The fenced dog park at P.A. Burns Reserve and the dog beach are both right by the trail.

Let the dog loose at Altona Dog Beach, then grab a coffee at Baci's Coffee.

When to go

Go early or late in summer, when the open path gets hot. Flat and sealed the whole way, it suits older dogs and anyone pushing a pram.
