Table Top

Table Top Mountain, known to locals as Meewah, is a steep, rocky bushwalk above Rangeville with a flat summit and open views across the Lockyer Valley. It is a genuine climb rather than a stroll, and the scrambles near the top decide whether the dog comes along at all.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on lead in the Table Top Mountain Bushland Reserve to protect wildlife, and this is a council reserve rule, not a suggestion. There is no off-lead section on the mountain.

The walk

The summit track is roughly 2 km return and takes about an hour and a quarter at a steady pace, climbing through open bush to the flat top. The grade is hard by Toowoomba standards, with rock scrambles in the final section and significant gaps and drops that are genuinely difficult for a dog to negotiate safely.

That terrain rules out small dogs, older dogs and anyone with mobility issues, and it means both ends of the leash need a reasonable fitness base. If your dog is not a confident climber, treat the lower track as the walk and skip the scramble.

Water and hazards

There is no water on the mountain, so carry enough for both of you, more in summer. Loose rocks on the steep sections are the main hazard, the track can turn slick after rain, and snakes are a warm-season consideration in the reserve.

When to go

Early morning is the standard play: cooler rock, better light over the valley and parking without a fight. The summit is exposed, so midday in summer is hard going for coated dogs.

Getting there and parking

The mountain sits on the southern edge of Rangeville, with trail access from the residential streets below and roadside parking near the base. It is a short drive from central Toowoomba.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead cooldown afterwards, Queens Park Dog Off Leash Area is the big inner-city option, and Taco Rocket Dog Habitat is the purpose-built alternative. Coffee is easy: The Coffee Chest in Rangeville or Picnic Point Toowoomba for the escarpment view.
