Firetail Walk

Firetail Walk is a 5.3 km escarpment loop in Picnic Point Bushland Reserve, Rangeville, zig-zagging down the edge of the Great Dividing Range with views over the Lockyer Valley. On-lead is enforced by council rangers throughout, so this is one for dogs who walk well on a lead rather than off-lead explorers.

The walk. A 5.3 km loop rated moderate, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail drops roughly 160 m over the first 2 km, so you descend first and climb steadily on the way back. It passes Carnival Falls and is a good spot for birdwatching along the way.

The rules. Dogs must be kept on-lead at all times within Picnic Point Bushland Reserve. This is enforced by Toowoomba Regional Council rangers on patrol, so keep the lead on even in the quieter stretches.

Water. There are no drinking water stations on the trail itself. Bring your own water and a portable bowl, especially given the climb back up in warmer months.

Hazards. The escarpment is a known hotspot for paralysis ticks, so check your dog thoroughly after the walk. There are no dog waste bins on the trail, so carry bags out with you.

Getting there. The trailhead starts near the rocket ship playground behind Lions Park, off Tourist Road / Rowbotham Street, Rangeville. Free car parking is available in front of Lions Park, and there are public toilets nearby at Picnic Point Square. Local buses run from Toowoomba CBD, but a car or rideshare is the practical option for this residential area.

Nearby with the dogs. At the top of the escarpment, picnic shelters, electric BBQs and grassy areas surround the Picnic Point lookouts, with Picnic Point Toowoomba right there for a coffee afterwards. Back in the suburb, The Coffee Chest is a solid post-walk stop, and if your dog has energy left, the connecting Table Top trail extends the outing.

When to go. Mornings are best, both for cooler tick-free conditions and quieter trail traffic with rangers about. Good for seniors and steady walkers who do not mind a solid climb at the end, less so for dogs that pull hard on-lead.
