What visitors mention
Archerfield Wetland is a 150 hectare reserve in Oxley built around the Wetlands Discovery Trail, a 2.9 km gravel path through eucalypt forest, open grassland and freshwater wetland that draws over 170 bird species, and it is one of the better quiet walks in the area if your dog is happy on the leash the whole way.
Leash status. On-leash for the entire trail. It is strictly enforced to protect the wetland's birdlife and because snakes are present in the grassland sections, so this is not the spot for an off-leash run.
The walk. The Discovery Trail runs 2.9 km one way on compacted gravel, past a waterhole lookout with shaded seating and birdlife signage along the way. Flat and easy underfoot, though open ground means little shade for most of the route.
Hazards. Check your dog for ticks after the walk. The reserve sits on a floodplain, so paths get muddy after heavy rain, and snakes are a real possibility in the long grass, keep dogs close and visible.
Getting there. Main entry is off Bowhill Road, Willawong, with a longer entry via Gleneagles Crescent in Oxley. It is about 12 km from the Brisbane CBD via the Ipswich Motorway, with parking at the Bowhill Road entrance. Oxley train station is the nearest stop, a five to ten minute drive or walk via side roads.

Best walked early morning before 8am or late afternoon after 4pm, when it is cooler and quieter. Good for a calm, on-leash walker who is happy to skip the swimming and take in the birdlife instead.
