Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads

Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads is a 9 km coastal walk on the Bellarine Peninsula, linking two towns by beach, river estuary and the bridge between them. The rules change more often than the scenery: dog access is zoned marker by marker, and the zone you are standing in decides whether your dog can be off lead, on lead, or there at all.

The walk. AllTrails puts the route at 9 km and grades it moderate, roughly two to two and a half hours. The surface alternates between hard sand near the water, gravel and concrete shared path along the Barwon River estuary, and the crossing at the Barwon Heads bridge. Most people walk out along the beach and return by the river.

The rules. Barwon Coast manages this coastline with the City of Greater Geelong, and its dog controls are specific. Dogs must be on lead in all car parks, on all shared trails and access paths, on jetties, and within 10 metres of playgrounds, picnic and barbecue areas. That covers the entire estuary path. On the beach itself, access is set by numbered markers and changes along the route, with seasonal restrictions over summer, so check the Barwon Coast dog control zone map before you set out rather than reading one sign and assuming it holds for the whole walk. Dogs must stay on the sandy zone closest to the water and must not enter the dunes or coastal vegetation. Hooded plovers nest along here, dogs must never enter a plover exclusion zone, and you are asked to keep 50 metres from any resting seal.

Water. Ocean on one side, sheltered estuary on the other. The estuary is the safer swim for a dog that is not strong in surf, though the path beside it is on lead. The rips at the ocean end are real.

Hazards. Exposure, mostly. There is no shade across the 9 km, and hot sand burns pads. Snakes use the dune vegetation in summer.

Getting there. Park at the Ocean Grove main beach or the fifth car park nearer Barwon Heads, or start from the bridge on the Barwon Heads side. Toilets and water are at the main access points, and V/Line buses reach Ocean Grove from Geelong.

Nearby with the dogs. Gather and Dawn Cafe both seat dogs outside, Bowlz covers the far end, and Paws by the Sea or Seahaven Village take dogs overnight.

When to go. May to October, or early morning in summer before the sand heats and the beach restrictions bite. Good for big runners with a long day in them.
