Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads

Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads is the walk that links the two Bellarine beach towns, roughly 9 km one way along the surf beach, the Barwon River estuary and the bridge between them. It is one of the best stretches of coastline on the peninsula to share with a dog, but it is also one of the most tightly zoned: the rules change marker by marker along the route.

The dog setup

Barwon Coast and the City of Greater Geelong manage this shoreline together, and their dog controls are specific. Dogs must be on lead at all times in car parks, on shared trails, on access paths and on jetties, which covers the entire estuary path.

On the sand itself, access is set by numbered beach markers and varies along the route, with seasonal restrictions over summer. Dogs are banned from the dunes and coastal vegetation, must stay on the sandy zone closest to the water, and are never allowed inside a hooded plover exclusion zone. Keep 50 metres from any resting seal, and read the current zone map before you set out rather than trusting a single sign.

Worth knowing

AllTrails grades the route moderate and budgets two to two and a half hours. The surface alternates between hard sand near the waterline, gravel and concrete shared path beside the estuary, and the crossing at the Barwon Heads bridge. Most walkers head out along the beach and return by the river.

Water access changes character along the way: open ocean surf at the Ocean Grove end, where the rips are real, and a sheltered estuary on the river side that is the safer swim for a dog that is not strong in waves. The estuary path is on lead, so any off-lead time happens on the beach sections that allow it.

Max: plover exclusion fencing moves between seasons, so the stretch where your dog ran free last spring may be roped off this one. Check the Barwon Coast zone map the morning you walk, not your memory.

Getting there

Start from the Ocean Grove end via the Main Beach car park off Surf Beach Road, or the Barwon Heads end near the bridge and river mouth. Both towns have street parking within an easy walk of the sand, and car parks are on-lead zones the moment you clip the lead on.

Make a day of it

Before or after the walk, point the car at the Ocean Grove dogs beach for a dedicated stretch of sand, then refuel at Dawn Cafe or Some Folk Coffee in town.
