Dog's beach public toilet

This is Ocean Grove's dedicated dog beach: the busy stretch of the Main Beach foreshore where Barwon Coast allows dogs off-lead year-round, sitting between the Hodgson Street and Aldebaran Road access points. It is a proper ocean beach with real tide movement, wide sandbanks that shift with the swell, and enough dog traffic in summer that the social side is part of the appeal.

Leash status

The off-leash zone runs between the 13W marker at Hodgson Street and the 8W marker at Aldebaran Road, and dogs must stay under effective control the whole time: in sight, within hearing, and coming back when called, with a leash carried. Dogs are banned outright from the beach between markers 13W and 15W, the dunes and coastal vegetation are off-limits at all times, and the eastern end past Bonnyvale Road is a wildlife protection zone where leads stay on. On-lead also applies in car parks, on access paths and within 10 metres of playgrounds and BBQ areas. Barwon Coast's dog control orders, in place since December 2023, are enforced, and fines apply.

Water and terrain

This is open Bass Strait coast, not a bay, so expect surf, rips and a beach that narrows sharply at high tide. The off-leash strip can shrink considerably on a big tide, so check a tide chart if your dog needs room to run. Sandbanks near the water's edge give shallows for waders, and the beach is patrolled seasonally with the flagged swimming zone for people.

Max: the marker posts are the law here, not the crowd. If you cannot see the 13W or 8W post from where your dog is running, you have drifted out of the zone.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Ocean Grove Road to Hodgson Street or Aldebaran Road and aim for the Barwon Coast car parks; the largest sits near the end of Hodgson Street, though beachside parking is limited and fills fast on summer weekends. Access from the dunes is by stairs and ramps. V/Line buses from Geelong serve Ocean Grove, but the western beach means a walk from the town centre.

Worth knowing

The facilities at this access point are the practical draw for dog owners: 24-hour public toilets and a cold rinse-off shower right near the entry, with waste bags and bins usually stocked at the main gates. Hooded plover nesting zones can appear along this coast in spring and summer, and the exclusion areas are non-negotiable, so read the signage each visit.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon are the cooler-sand, quieter-sand slots, and a low or dropping tide leaves the most running room. Summer weekends are the crush, when parking is the limiting factor rather than the beach itself.
