Point Lonsdale Dog Beach

Point Lonsdale Dog Beach, also known as Narrows Beach, is the year-round off-leash stretch between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine. Its defining trait is 24-hour off-leash access on the calm bay side, which keeps it open even through the summer restrictions that close dogs out of the borough's other beaches.

Leash status

Under Borough of Queenscliffe rules the off-leash zone runs between Roddick Grove and Fraser Street, with dogs under effective voice or hand control and within your sight the whole time. Keep the lead on until you reach the boundary and clip it back on before leaving. From 1 December to the end of February, dogs are banned from the borough's other beaches between 9am and 8pm, but this designated dog beach stays off-leash right through summer, which is exactly why it draws visitors from across the Bellarine.

Stay out of the fenced sand dune and coastal vegetation areas, and west of Fellows Road the foreshore becomes a wildlife protection zone where dogs must be on-leash. Do not let your dog harass resting seals or nesting hooded plovers. Bins are provided and the council and community usually stock doggy bags on site.

Max: watch the tide against the seawall. At the top of the tide the running room shrinks fast, so an outgoing tide is the better window for a proper off-leash session.

Water and terrain

This is the sheltered bay side of the peninsula, so the water stays calm and suits dogs that like to swim without surf to fight. The stretch is clean, open and sandy with plenty of room to run, and the foreshore is natural with little development crowding it. At high tide the usable sand narrows back against the seawall, so a mid-to-low tide gives far more space; check the BOM tide times before heading down.

Getting there and parking

Drive in along the Bellarine Highway onto Point Lonsdale Road; the beach sits along the coastal road linking the two townships, and a paid parking area serves Narrows Beach with wheelchair-accessible spaces. Without a car, take a V/Line train to Geelong and a connecting bus to Point Lonsdale, or simply walk or ride the coastal path between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale straight to the sand.

Worth knowing

Weekends, particularly Saturday afternoons, are the busiest stretches; weekday mornings and evenings are the quietest. Aim for a mid-to-low tide on a weekday morning and you will likely have most of the beach to yourselves. The calm water profile makes this a good pick for confident swimmers rather than surf dogs.

While you're out there

La Loca Cafe sits on the Queenscliff strip with outdoor seating for a post-beach coffee, and Manly Lagoon dog park is a grassy fallback if the weather turns. If you are staying over, Queenscliffe Tourist Parks is the local caravan option, and the Ocean Grove dogs beach makes an easy second stop along the peninsula.
