Dogs Head Rock

Dogs Head Rock, known locally as Jumping Rock, is a rugged coastal spot off St Johns Wood Road in Blairgowrie, part of the Bridgewater Bay reserve on the Mornington Peninsula. This is not a stroll-up beach: a rough fifteen-minute walk over sand, loose dirt and wet rock separates the car park from the water, and the payoff is a dramatic sandstone cliff line with a natural deep-water rock pool.

Leash status

Dogs stay on-leash in the car park and across the cliff-top approach, and Mornington Peninsula Shire's seasonal beach restriction applies on the sand nearby: no dogs between 12pm and 7pm from 26 December to 1 March, with off-leash permitted outside those times. Keep dogs on the path the whole way down to protect the surrounding vegetation and wildlife, and carry your own waste bags because there are no bins here.

Water and terrain

The approach is genuinely difficult underfoot: jagged sandstone, loose dirt and wet rock, not suitable for prams or dogs with sore joints, and sturdy closed-toe shoes or water shoes earn their keep. The rock pool and surrounding water can be extremely dangerous and are sometimes entirely submerged at high tide, so check Bureau of Meteorology tide times before heading down. Only let your dog swim in calm conditions; open ocean currents here can run strong.

Max: this is a leash-on, watch-your-footing spot, not a let-them-loose beach. Check the tide before you commit to the walk down, and skip it if the rocks are wet and your dog is not sure-footed.

Getting there and parking

Turn off Point Nepean Road onto St Johns Wood Road and follow it to the end, where a gravel car park sits at the trail entrance. It fills quickly on summer weekends, so arrive early. Bus route 788 runs along Point Nepean Road but leaves a long walk to the trailhead, so driving is the practical option.

Worth knowing

There are no restrooms, drinking fountains or dog bins on site, so pack extra water and a collapsible bowl for the dog and plenty for yourself. The site is best treated as a clifftop walk with a swim option rather than a casual beach visit: skip it altogether on rough or wet-rock days.

When to go

Weekday mornings outside the summer restriction window give you the calmest water and an empty car park. In the December to March peak, aim for before 10am to beat both the heat and the 12pm no-dogs rule.

For a straightforward off-leash run on sand instead of rock, the Rye Beach Dog Off Leash Area is ten minutes east and the Sorrento Beach Dog Off Leash Area is the other direction. Freaky Tiki Cafe in Rye is a casual post-walk stop.
