What visitors mention
Dogs Head Rock, also known locally as Jumping Rock, is a rugged coastal spot on St Johns Wood Road in Blairgowrie, part of the Bridgewater Bay reserve. It is not a stroll-up beach - a rough fifteen-minute walk over sand, loose dirt and wet rock separates the carpark from the water, and the payoff is a dramatic sandstone cliff line with a natural deep-water rock pool.
The rules. Dogs must stay on-leash in the carpark and across the cliff-top approach. Mornington Peninsula Shire's seasonal restriction applies on the nearby beaches: no dogs between 12pm and 7pm from 26 December to 1 March, off-leash permitted at all other times. Keep dogs on the path to protect the surrounding vegetation and wildlife, and carry your own waste bags - there are no bins here.
Terrain and water. The approach is genuinely difficult underfoot: jagged sandstone, loose dirt and wet rock, not suitable for prams or dogs with sore joints. Sturdy closed-toe shoes or water shoes are worth the effort. The rock pool and surrounding water can be extremely dangerous and are sometimes entirely submerged at high tide, so check the Bureau of Meteorology tide times before heading down, and only let your dog swim in calm conditions - open ocean currents here can run strong.
What's there. No restrooms, drinking fountains or dog bins on site, so pack extra water and a collapsible bowl. A gravel carpark sits at the trail entrance but fills quickly on weekends.
Getting there. Turn off Point Nepean Road onto St Johns Wood Road and follow it to the end. Bus route 788 runs along Point Nepean Road but leaves a long walk to the trailhead, so driving is the practical option.

When to go. Early on a weekday morning is quietest, before swimmers and cliff jumpers arrive, and gives you the best chance of a low, safe tide. Confirm conditions on the day - this one rewards preparation, not spontaneity.
