The rules. This is a seasonal off-leash zone with firm time windows. From 26 December to 1 March, dogs may only be off-leash before 9am and after 7pm. Between 9am and 7pm during that summer window, dogs must remain on-leash. Outside the summer period, the beach is off-leash at all times. Owners must pick up after their dog, and fines apply for non-compliance. Dog waste bag dispensers are typically provided at entrance points.

Terrain and water. The beach is broad and flat with clean sand, and the water sits shallow and calm, which suits dogs of most confidence levels for swimming and wading. Lower to mid tide exposes the most usable sand, giving plenty of room for a retrieve, though the beach remains pleasant at higher tides.

What's there. Dog waste bag dispensers sit at the main entrance points. Water access for dogs is available along the foreshore. Beyond that, expect a natural beach environment rather than a manicured facility. The Sorrento township, a short distance along Point Nepean Road, has dog-friendly cafes and pet-friendly accommodation if you need provisions or a base.

Getting there. The beach sits on Point Nepean Road, Sorrento. From Melbourne, take the Mornington Peninsula Freeway for the most direct route. The 788 bus service runs along Point Nepean Road and serves the area. The Sorrento Ferry Terminal is a few minutes' drive from the beach, with services connecting to and from Queenscliff. A dedicated parking area sits nearby, but it fills rapidly during peak summer.

Watch-outs. Dogs are prohibited from any area clearly marked as dog-prohibited. Critically, dogs are forbidden on beaches, formed walking tracks, and car parks within the neighbouring Mornington Peninsula National Park. This stretch runs up to the Portsea boundary, so be aware of where the national park exclusion zones begin. Check signage at the entrance and along the foreshore before letting your dog range.

When to go. During summer (26 December to 1 March), arrive before 9am to secure a parking spot and enjoy the full off-leash window before the on-leash restriction kicks in. Sunny weekends and the school holiday period draw heavy crowds, so weekdays or evening visits after 7pm offer the most space. At any other time of year, the beach is off-leash around the clock, making the cooler months the most flexible window. Aim for lower to mid tide for the widest run of sand, particularly if you have a dog that likes to cover ground.
