Sorrento Beach Dog Off Leash Area

The Sorrento Beach dog off leash area is a wide sandy stretch on the Sorrento foreshore, running from the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club towards the Portsea boundary on the Mornington Peninsula. Calm, shallow bay water and a broad flat run of sand make it one of the Peninsula's better swimming beaches for dogs, provided you plan around the strict summer time of day rules.

The rules

This is a seasonal off leash zone with firm time windows, managed under the Mornington Peninsula Shire's dog controls, which were updated in December 2024. Over the summer peak, dogs are only off leash in the early morning and evening, with a daytime on lead or prohibition period in force. Outside the summer months, the beach is off leash at all times.

One caution: published listings disagree on the exact summer window, with some citing 1 December to end of February with a 10am to 6pm prohibition and others a late December to 1 March window with a 9am to 7pm on lead rule. Check the shire's dog map or the signage at the entrance for the current hours before you plan an off leash session, and note fines apply for non compliance.

The water

The beach is broad and flat with clean sand, and the water sits shallow and calm, which suits dogs across most confidence levels for wading and swimming. Lower to mid tide exposes the widest run of usable sand for retrieves, though it stays pleasant at high tide.

What's there

Dog waste bag dispensers sit at the main entrance points, with water access along the foreshore. Beyond that it is a natural beach environment rather than a built facility, and the Sorrento township along Point Nepean Road covers everything else you might need.

Getting there

The beach sits on Point Nepean Road in Sorrento, reached most directly from Melbourne via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. The 788 bus runs along Point Nepean Road, and the Sorrento Ferry Terminal to Queenscliff is a few minutes away. A dedicated parking area sits nearby, but it fills rapidly at the height of summer.

Watch outs

Keep your dog on lead through the foreshore paths and car parks until you reach the designated zone, and keep the dog within sight and under voice control on the sand. Critically, dogs are prohibited at all times on the neighbouring national park coastline: the Bass Strait ocean beaches between Portsea and Flinders are Parks Victoria land where dogs are banned year round, so stay on the bay side and check signage as the beach runs up towards the Portsea boundary.
