Vern Wright Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Vern Wright Reserve's fenced dog park sits in the south-west corner of the wider reserve, off Shearwater Place in Capel Sound on the Mornington Peninsula. It is genuinely secure: double-gate entry and full perimeter fencing around a run big enough for a proper burn rather than a token pen, with the beach strip of Port Phillip Bay only a few minutes away.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the fenced area. Once you step out into the surrounding playground and picnic zones, the lead goes back on, so plan the walk-in with that in mind. Owners need voice control over their dogs at all times, and waste bins are provided so there is no excuse not to pick up. There is some shade from mature trees and seating for owners waiting out a zoomie session. Water is the weak point: taps and bowls are inconsistent, so bring your own for the dog.

Max: check the gate is fully latched behind you before letting your dog off lead. The double-gate system only works if both gates are never open at once.

The vibe

The wider reserve carries the family load with playgrounds, BBQs and picnic spots, so weekday middays tend to be dog-first and quiet. Early mornings and late afternoons on weekends bring the crowds, and if your dog gets overwhelmed by a packed park, aim for the gap in between. Most visitors are locals from Capel Sound and Rosebud West, which keeps the mood predictable.

Getting there and parking

Free parking sits right next to the reserve on Shearwater Place, which turns off Boneo Road. Local buses run along Boneo Road with a short walk in from the closest stop. Coming from Melbourne, the trip down the Peninsula ends up on Boneo Road whatever route you take, so the turn-off is hard to miss.

Close by with the dogs

Along the Point Nepean Road strip in Rosebud, Zarb & Ru has dog-friendly outdoor tables, and pet-friendly holiday houses around Capel Sound and Rosebud West come up regularly if you are staying rather than day-tripping; Capel Caravan Park is right in the suburb. If the run does not tire your dog out, the Rye Beach Dog Off Leash Area adds a swim, and Lawson Park Fenced Dog Off Leash Park is another fenced option a few minutes north.
