J.C. Slaughter Falls

J.C. Slaughter Falls is the well-known trailhead into Mt Coot-tha Reserve on Gap Creek Road, with a shaded picnic area, a seasonal waterfall and the start of the track climbing toward the summit. For dog owners it is an easy sell: proper bushland, a genuine creek line, and a walk that scales from a short stroll to a solid climb.

The walk

From the falls, the main track runs roughly 2 kilometres each way up to the Mt Coot-tha summit, rated easy to moderate, with connecting loops such as the Car Wreck Loop if you want more distance. The surface is mostly formed bush track with rockier, uneven sections near the creek. It suits a reasonably fit dog rather than a five-minute sniffari, though the lower flats are fine for a potter.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome across the reserve but must be on a lead at all times. The rule is actively enforced because the trails are shared with walkers, runners and mountain bikes, and the reserve is protected wildlife habitat. Keep your dog on the formed path to protect the surrounding bush.

Water and hazards

There is a water fountain near the picnic area, but bring your own bowl since it is set up for people, not dogs. After rain the tracks turn muddy, the creek runs and the falls actually fall, which is the best time to see them and the slipperiest time to be on the rocks. Stay alert for snakes in the warmer months, and give the brush turkeys room to be turkeys.

Getting there and parking

The falls have their own car park off Gap Creek Road, about 5 kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD via Musgrave Road and Coopers Camp Road. Public transport is limited, so driving is the practical option. The car park fills quickly on weekends; there are toilets, barbecues and a large shaded picnic area at the trailhead.
