Gap Creek Reserve

Gap Creek Reserve sits within the Mt Coot-tha Forest on the Kenmore Hills side, a network of shaded eucalypt trails built more for mountain bikers than dog walkers but perfectly workable on leash. The pull is the bush itself: steep climbs, creek beds and enough trail variety that an active dog gets a proper outing rather than a lap of a park.

The walk

The reserve is a hub for multi-use trails, from the easy Rocket Frog Trail up to the demanding Gillians Circuit, with the popular Gap Creek Loop threading through forested, hilly country between them. Expect a mix of unsealed fire trail and single track, some of it genuinely steep. This is one for fit, active dogs rather than a gentle wander with an older or small dog.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on a leash at all times across the reserve. The trails carry serious mountain bike traffic, so a leashed, controlled dog matters here as much for safety as for the rules. Some tracks are signed for bike use only, so read the signage before you commit.

Max: Stick to the main trails and listen for bikes on the descents. This reserve gets real MTB traffic and blind corners are common on the single track.

Water and hazards

There is no dedicated dog water station, so bring your own bowl and enough water for a warm climb. Watch for snakes in the warmer months, and keep an eye out for koalas, which do turn up in this pocket of forest. Toilets and basic picnic tables sit near the car park, and that is where the facilities end.

Getting there and parking

The main car park is at the end of Gap Creek Road, off Moggill Road in Kenmore Hills, free and unsealed. Public transport barely reaches the trailhead, with the closest option the 444 bus on Moggill Road still leaving a long walk in, so driving is the realistic plan.
