Green Hill Reservoir

Green Hill Reservoir sits at the top of Chapel Hill, an open, unfenced off-leash area wrapped around a water reservoir with 360-degree views across Brisbane. It is one of the highest-rated dog spots in the suburb, and the payoff is the view, not the facilities.

The rules. Dogs are permitted off-leash on the grassed areas around the reservoir but must be under effective control at all times. The area is unfenced and borders residential roads, so dogs without solid recall should stay on lead here rather than off.

Terrain and shade. Open grass with a bitumen ring path at the top, good for laps, but shade is minimal across most of the site with only a few trees at the perimeter. Bring your own shade plan for the middle of the day, especially in summer.

What's there. Dog waste bins are provided. Reports differ on whether there is a water tap or fountain on site, so bring water for both of you to be safe. Seating is limited and there are no public toilets.

Getting there. The reservoir sits at the end of a residential street off Moggill Road, with a small car park that fills quickly at peak times, backing up onto street parking nearby. Bus routes run through Chapel Hill, but the final stretch up to the reservoir is a genuine climb.

Watch-outs. The open, semi-bushland edges mean standard snake vigilance in the warmer months, and it can be exposed and windy at the top, pleasant in summer heat but cold in winter.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes around Kenmore Village and Chapel Hill offer outdoor pet-friendly seating for a coffee after the walk, and there are pet-friendly stay options scattered through Kenmore and Indooroopilly if you are making a longer visit of it.

Go early morning or late afternoon for the softest light over the city and to dodge the sun on a shadeless site. Weekend mornings draw the biggest crowds, but the reservoir grounds are large enough that it rarely feels packed. Good for dogs that love a view and a decent open run, less so for nervous dogs unsettled by wind and open space.
