Green Hill Reservoir

Green Hill Reservoir sits at the top of Chapel Hill, an open, unfenced off-leash area wrapped around a working water reservoir with 360-degree views across Brisbane and out to the western suburbs. The payoff is the view and the space, not the facilities, and the regulars treat the bitumen ring path as their daily lap.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted off-leash on the grassed areas around the reservoir under effective control, per Brisbane City Council's off-leash rules. Nothing here is fenced, and the open edges run towards residential roads and semi-bushland, so it is one for dogs with solid recall rather than a pup still learning. If yours is a flight risk, keep the lead on and do the loop anyway; the path is flat and sealed and works well on lead.

Max: unfenced and next to real traffic. Great for a dog who comes back when called, wrong for a first off-leash outing.

The vibe

The Tom Gaffney Lookout staircase climbs to the high point for skyline views, and sunset draws a genuine crowd, dog walkers mixed with photographers and families on scooters. Shade is minimal with only a few perimeter trees, so the middle of a summer day is hard work. The top is exposed and windy, pleasant in the heat and chilly in winter. Waste bins are provided; seating and toilets are not, and reports differ on whether a working water tap is on site, so bring water for both of you.

Getting there and parking

The reservoir sits at 278 Russell Terrace at the end of a residential street off Moggill Road, with vehicle entry typically via Dellamara Street. The small car park fills quickly at peak times and backs up onto street parking. Buses run through Chapel Hill, but the final climb up to the reservoir is a genuine walk, so most visitors drive.
