Cubberla Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area occupies a leafy pocket of a wider 12-hectare reserve on Hepworth Street, Chapel Hill, built around the creek line with flat paved paths that make easy laps. This is a creekside walk-and-run rather than a hardcore off-leash session: the designated zone is only partly fenced, so it rewards dogs with decent recall and owners who like scenery with their exercise.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies within the designated zone only; everywhere else in the reserve, including the shared paths past the playground and sports fields, dogs stay on lead. There is no fully enclosed double-gated entry, and the creek and bushland edges are natural boundaries, so keep a high-prey-drive dog within arm's reach. Brisbane City Council's rules carry over: carry a leash, stay close, control by voice, pick up with the dispensers provided, and keep unvaccinated puppies and dogs in heat out of the area. A water tap, shaded shelter and seating sit within reach of the zone.

The vibe

Calm and green, with junior soccer fields and the Cubberla Creek Reserve East playground nearby bringing families through on weekends. Sunset draws the best light over the creek and the biggest crowd; early mornings and midweek are noticeably quieter if your dog needs space to settle. Weekend mornings run busy too.

Max: this is not the park to test a new recall. The creek side has no fence, and a treed creek corridor is a magnet for wildlife. Save the off-lead work for a yard with gates.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Moggill Road via Hepworth Street, with street parking directly along Hepworth Street and a car park area adjacent to the dog zone. Brisbane City Council buses along Moggill Road drop you a short walk away. The reserve's flat paths suit strollers and bikes as well as dogs.

Worth knowing

The ground near the creek softens after rain and the low patches hold water, so allow a day or two to dry out after a big weather event. Mosquitoes come with creek-side territory at dusk in summer, so evening visits in the wet season call for repellent. Because the zone is only partly fenced, the reserve works best as part of a longer on-lead loop rather than a stand-alone off-leash stop.

Close by with the dogs

For a fully fenced session, Merri Merri Park Fenced Dog Park is the secure option in the same suburb, and Fig Tree Pocket Off Leash Dog Park is a short drive east. The Olive Grove Cafe at Kenmore does outdoor seating for the post-walk coffee.
