Paten Park Fenced Dog Park

Paten Park's fenced dog park sits at 51 Paten Road, up towards the leafy end of The Gap, and it is the suburb's most secure place to take the lead off. The enclosure is fully fenced with double-gated entries, open around the clock, and edged by bush rather than back fences, which gives it a quieter feel than most suburban dog runs.

The dog setup

The ground inside is mostly sand and dirt with grassy patches, which makes it a digger's park: there is a dedicated sand pad for dogs who like to excavate, plus a simple agility beam and scattered shade and seating for owners. A separate small-dog enclosure keeps toy breeds and nervous dogs away from the boisterous crowd, and a dog drinking fountain covers hydration. No public toilets on site, so plan around that.

The rules

This is a Brisbane City Council designated off-leash area. Keep your dog leashed until both of you are through the double gates, stay inside the enclosure while the lead is off, and close every gate behind you. Any dog showing aggression should be leashed and removed straight away, and waste goes in the bins provided.

Getting there and parking

Turn off Waterworks Road onto Payne Road and continue to Paten Road. Free street parking runs along Paten Road and is usually easy, and bus stops on the nearby main roads leave you a short walk from the gate.

Max: the sand and dirt hold moisture long after the sky clears, so a towel in the boot is not optional at this one.

Worth knowing

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quiet windows; weekend mornings and the after-work stretch from about five draw the regulars, with more dogs loose at once. If yours is the nervous type, use the small-dog enclosure first and gauge the mood of the main yard before committing.

Close by with the dogs

Walton Bridge Reserve on Waterworks Road is the natural on-lead leg-stretch before or after, with Enoggera Creek running through it. For another fenced run, Wittonga Park's fenced dog park is a few minutes away with toilets and a playground alongside, and Corramulling Park offers unfenced creek-side running for dogs with solid recall.
