Flinders Street Station to Darling Station

This is a long one-way walk from Flinders Street Station out to Darling Station on the Glen Waverley line, following the Yarra River east and then the Gardiners Creek shared path through Melbourne's inner east. At about 13 km one way it is graded moderate mostly for its length rather than its difficulty, and it crosses three council areas, which means the dog rules change under your feet.

The walk

Roughly 13 km one way, two and a half to three hours at a steady walking pace. The route is flat for almost the entire distance and sealed shared path for most of it. It leaves the city along the Yarra, tracks the river east to Burnley where Gardiners Creek joins it, then climbs away from the water through the eastern suburbs to finish near Darling Station. Because the return leg is a train ride rather than a second 13 km, this is one of the better big-distance dog walks in Melbourne.

Leash status

Dogs are permitted on lead along both the Yarra River and Gardiners Creek shared paths. The City of Melbourne requires dogs on a leash no longer than 3 metres on shared paths and within 5 metres of them, and the City of Stonnington and City of Boroondara manage the rest of the corridor with their own rules. Several off leash reserves sit beside the path along the way, but the path itself is an on-lead shared route the whole distance, so read the signage at each reserve rather than carrying one assumption for 13 km.

Hazards

This is a working bike route. The Yarra path near the city carries fast commuter cyclists, so keep your dog on the left and short of the sightlines at bends. Weekday commuter peaks are the worst window in both directions.

Getting there and back

Start at Flinders Street Station and finish at Darling Station. Dogs on Melbourne Metro services travel under Public Transport Victoria conditions, which include muzzling requirements for larger dogs, so confirm the current rules with PTV before counting on the ride home. Water fountains appear at intervals along the river section in the city, but carry water for the suburban half.

While you're out there

Flinders Street to Chapel Street via Yarra River is the shorter version of the same corridor, and Main Yarra Trail North Side runs the other bank. Golden Square Bicentennial Park at Burnley is an off leash break near the halfway mark. More options sit on the VIC trails list and around Melbourne.

When to go

A weekday mid morning start is the sweet spot: commuter peaks avoided, paths quiet, sun not yet high on the open river stretches. Weekend mornings are pleasant but busy. The route suits big steady walkers who need the distance rather than the hills.
