Maribyrnong River Trail at Medway

The path past Medway Golf Club is a stretch of the Maribyrnong River Trail, running beside the river on the Maidstone and Braybrook border. Dogs are welcome, but only on a lead.

Lead rules

Maribyrnong City Council requires dogs on a leash no longer than three metres on this shared path. Off-lead running is kept to designated reserves nearby.

The walk

The sealed shared path follows the winding river under mature river red gums, with open grassy parkland on one side and the fairways of the golf course on the other.

It is flat and smooth, so it suits older dogs and prams alike. Water and bins are more reliable in the nearby reserves than along the path, so bring water for the dog.

Make a day of it

Scovell Reserve Dog Off Leash Area in Maidstone has an oval where dogs can run off lead, plus a water tap with a bowl. Martin Reserve Fenced Dog Park in West Footscray is a fenced alternative.

When to go

Watch for detour signs, as Melbourne Water works along the river can reroute the path. Flat, sealed and close to off-lead reserves, it suits a routine on-lead walk for dogs of any age.
