Mundlimup Timber Trail

Mundlimup Timber Trail is an easy jarrah forest walk on Balmoral Road east of the Jarrahdale townsite, about an hour's drive from Perth. It follows an old timber tramway past a saw pit and log loading ramps, with sign-posted loop options from roughly 2km up to 6km, and it is one of the walks in the Darling Range where dogs are genuinely welcome.

The walk

The main loop is about 3km and takes around an hour at a relaxed pace, graded easy with gentle gradients through regrowth jarrah and banksia. Most of it is shaded under a century-old forest canopy, which keeps dogs comfortable even in warmer months. Longer options link into sections of the broader tramway and Munda Biddi track network if you want more distance.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on lead the entire way, and here it is a safety rule rather than etiquette: the area is used for 1080 fox baiting, which is highly toxic to domestic dogs. Keep your dog strictly on the marked path and out of the undergrowth, and a fitted muzzle is worth considering as a second layer of protection.

Water and hazards

There is no water on the trail, so carry enough for both of you, especially in warmer months. Mountain bikers share sections on weekends, so keep left and step aside. Public toilets are not confirmed on site, so plan to use facilities in the Jarrahdale townsite first.

Getting there and parking

Drive to Jarrahdale and head east on Balmoral Road to the small dirt car park at the trailhead, which has a picnic table and BBQ area. Public transport does not reach it, so driving is the practical option.

When to go

Weekdays are quiet; weekend and public-holiday mornings draw more walkers and cyclists. June to November brings wildflowers and cooler walking, and an early start beats the summer heat. Afterwards, Jarrahdale Local Po Kitchen in town is a stop for leashed dogs outside, and Jarrahdale Railway Trail extends the day if the legs still have more in them.
