Jacana Wetlands

Jacana Wetlands follows Moonee Ponds Creek through Jacana, a birdwatching stretch of open wetland and retarding basin on a concrete shared path. Dogs are welcome, but on lead on and near the path.

Lead rules

Hume City Council requires dogs to be leashed within 1 metre of the shared paths at all times. Parts of the surrounding reserve are designated off-leash zones, so look for the signs if you want to let your dog run.

Dogs are not allowed in the creek or the wetland waterways, even on a hot day.

Max: Birds on the water will test your dog's manners. Keep the lead short where the path runs close to the edge.

The walk

The path is smooth and paved, and it forms part of the wider Broadmeadows Valley Park trail network, so you can keep going for a long, uninterrupted walk.

Shade is patchy, with open grassy banks and scattered native trees. Taps are sparse and bins are thin on the remote stretches, so carry water and bags.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead run, try Broadmeadows Valley Park Northern Reach or Progress Reserve in Coolaroo.

Cooler mornings suit it best, when the birdlife is busy and the open banks have not heated up.
