Progress Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a straightforward, no-frills green space at 26-38 Dargie Court in Coolaroo, adjacent to Barry Road and managed by Hume City Council. Its appeal is a relaxed, open layout that suits a quick run or a focused training session, and being a neighbourhood reserve it rarely feels crowded. Set expectations accordingly: this is open grass for recall work, not a fenced playground.

The dog setup

This is an open-style off-leash area with limited or no high-security perimeter fencing, so it is best suited to social dogs with rock-solid recall rather than dogs prone to wandering. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times and leashed in other parts of the reserve, particularly near the playground and picnic areas. There are no dedicated dog drinking fountains, so bring your own water.

Worth knowing

One detail matters more than anything else here: the reserve sits next to local school grounds, and under Hume City Council rules dogs must stay on leash during school hours, 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday on school days. Outside those hours and on weekends and holidays the off-leash designation applies. Carry bags and pick up, keep your dog registered, and do not tie a dog within 10 metres of a school entry. Shade trees dot the edges of the park for cooling off.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is in a residential pocket off Barry Road, with street parking on Dargie Court and surrounding streets. Coolaroo station on the Craigieburn line is close enough to walk from, and the Barry Road commercial strip is nearby for supplies. Weekday evenings after school hours and weekend mornings are the practical windows for off-leash time.
