Central Station to Circular Quay

This is 6.6 km of city footpath from Central Station to Circular Quay, running through Haymarket and up the George Street spine to the harbour. The deciding fact for dog owners: you can walk the route, but you cannot catch the train that shares its name, since pets are banned from Sydney Trains and Metro stations and trains outright.

The walk

AllTrails logs 6.6 km and about an hour and a half, rated moderate, which is fair for pavement: the distance and the crowds do the work rather than the gradient. It is a one-way route, so the honest planning number is 13 km if you walk back.

The route runs through Haymarket and Chinatown and up George Street past Town Hall, Wynyard and the shops, finishing on the Circular Quay forecourt with the harbour and Opera House in front of you.

Leash status

The route runs almost entirely on City of Sydney footpaths and roadways, where dogs are welcome but must be leashed at all times, including the Quay forecourt. There is no off-leash section anywhere along it.

Water and getting home

Carry water for the dog; there is almost no grass between Central and the Quay to pause on. Do not count on public transport for the return: light rail will carry a pet only with staff permission and only confined in a box or basket, and buses and ferries work at driver or crew discretion, who can refuse a full service.

Max: a short lead beats a long one here. Light rail runs level with the footpath along George Street and there is zero room for error.

Watch-outs

Heat is the main hazard: dark pavement in a street canyon holds warmth long after the air cools, so test the surface with the back of your hand before committing on a summer afternoon. Crowds are the other one, with George Street shoulder to shoulder between 7:30am and 9am and again after 5pm, and a cruise ship in at Circular Quay turns the forecourt into a crush.

Getting there

The start is Central Station itself, reached by whatever brought you to the CBD. If you drive, park once and walk the loop, because the one-way format plus the train ban makes car-free logistics awkward with a dog.

Close by with the dogs

At the Quay end, The Australian Heritage Hotel in The Rocks is a dog-friendly pub stop worth the extra blocks, and Cook and Phillip Park gives you a strip of grass mid-route.

When to go

Mid-morning on a weekday is the calm version of this walk, before the lunch surge and after the commuter crush. Weekend mornings work too, though the Quay stays busy; summer should be walked early, full stop.
