Gough Whitlam Park

Gough Whitlam Park lines the Cooks River off Bayview Avenue, with a paved shared path, restored saltmarsh and wetland beside the water. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Canterbury-Bankstown requires dogs on a lead on the riverside paths and open lawns. It is not an off-leash park.

The walk

The concrete and asphalt shared path, with some boardwalk, runs flat and continuous along the river. Cyclists use it too, so keep the lead short.

Mature trees and picnic shelters give some shade, and bins sit near the main paths. Water access varies, so bring a bottle and bowl.

The path carries on into neighbouring riverside parks, so the walk can be as long as you like.

Make a day of it

Hughes Park Fenced Dog Park in Earlwood is the place for an off-lead run, and Frank & Chitch is a local coffee stop.

Flat, paved and continuous, it suits older dogs and anyone after a long, steady river walk.
