Flagstaff Gardens

Flagstaff Gardens is a heritage-listed park on the edge of the CBD in West Melbourne, bounded by William, La Trobe and King streets. Dogs are welcome on lead only, and the grand elms and Moreton Bay figs make it a shady city walk.

Lead rules

The City of Melbourne does not allow dogs off lead anywhere in the gardens. Keep the lead on for the whole visit.

The walk

Paved and asphalt paths sweep across historic lawns, past monuments and out to views of the city skyline. Elms, figs and plane trees shade much of the lawn and the paths.

It is a social stop for apartment dwellers walking their dogs, so expect plenty of other dogs at busy times.

Getting started

Drinking fountains are in the park grounds and bins line the main paths, though a portable bottle for the dog helps. Street parking is limited and paid, so Flagstaff Station or a tram is the easier way in.

Where to let them run

For off-lead time, Eades Park Fenced Dog Park is close by in West Melbourne. North Melbourne Recreation Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is another option.

Summer afternoons are when the tree canopy earns its keep. It suits dogs that are relaxed on lead around people and city noise.
