EastLink Trail

The EastLink Trail runs about 35 kilometres through Melbourne's east, beside the EastLink motorway from Donvale down to Carrum. It is sealed from end to end, and dogs must stay on a leash the whole way.

The walk

The path is mostly concrete with some asphalt, so it stays mud-free when bush tracks turn slick. It often breaks away from the freeway into parkland, wetlands and creek corridors such as the Mullum Mullum valley.

You can pick up any section and turn around when your dog has had enough. It links a string of parks and reserves along the way.

Leads and local councils

The trail passes through several councils, including Manningham, Maroondah, Whitehorse, Knox and Greater Dandenong. The leash rule holds on every section.

Water and shade

Water taps are scarce on the main corridor, so carry water or detour into a neighbouring park. Shade and bins cluster around entry points, underpasses and adjoining reserves rather than along the highway stretches.

Parking is at the main access points and nearby parks.

When to go

Choose a creek or wetland stretch for the most shade, and go early in summer, as the exposed sections by the road heat up fast.
