Cooleman Ridge Nature Track

Cooleman Ridge Nature Track is a 187-hectare native woodland reserve in Chapman offering on-leash dog access across fire trails and single tracks with panoramic views over Tuggeranong Valley, Weston Creek, the Brindabellas and Namadgi.

The rules. Dogs are permitted on-leash only and must stay on designated tracks and trails at all times. The reserve shares boundaries with the Bicentennial National Trail where horse riding is permitted, so keep your dog calm and close if you encounter riders. Carry your own waste bags — bins are not guaranteed.

The walk. Roughly 3.6 km of mixed fire trails and single tracks with undulating terrain, making it a moderate workout suited to dogs comfortable with hills and uneven ground rather than a flat stroll. Boulder outcrops along the route give plenty of sniffing interest.

What's there. Open woodland with solid bird watching and wide valley views from the ridge line. No water facilities anywhere on trail, so bring enough for you and your dog plus a collapsible bowl. No public toilets either. A picnic spot works well if you carry everything in and out.

Getting there. Park at the end of Kathner Street or Percy Crescent in Chapman. Both are residential streets so be mindful of locals.

Bella: The exposed ridge offers almost no shade, so avoid middle of the day in summer. Early morning is best — cooler ground, fewer bikes, and the birds are active.

A solid on-leash bushwalk for dogs who like a climb and a good sniff. Not the spot for off-leash freedom, but genuine nature reserve walking without leaving Canberra. Grab a post-walk feed at Little Billy's in Weston or Meating Room nearby.
