Seven Hills Circuit

Seven Hills Circuit is a 3.1 km loop through Seven Hills Bushland Reserve, a fifty hectare pocket of eucalypt forest and dry rainforest on the Brisbane side of Cannon Hill, about ten kilometres east of the city centre. It reads as genuine bush rather than a suburban park, which is exactly the appeal: quiet tracks, wildlife in the understorey, and city views from the high ground. The trade off is a single firm rule that dogs stay on lead the whole way, because the reserve is managed as a nature refuge and not a dog park.

The walk

The circuit links the Ridge Track and the Gully Track through open forest and shaded gullies, and most walkers are round in under an hour at an easy pace. Grading is easy to moderate. There are a few short steep pitches, some fitted with railings, and loose gravel on the slopes that can shift underfoot after rain. Signage at the track junctions is clear enough that you are unlikely to wander off route, and benches appear at intervals if someone in the group needs a break. From the higher sections you get filtered views back towards the city skyline through the trees.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome on lead throughout the reserve, a rule Brisbane City Council applies across its bushland and conservation reserves. This is koala habitat and home to blue-tongue lizards and ground-dwelling birds, and dogs are the main pressure on that wildlife. Keep the lead on for the full loop. If your dog needs a proper off-lead run afterwards, the fenced enclosures at Orana Park and Keralgerie Park are both close by.

Water

There are no taps on the circuit and the creek through the gullies is not something to rely on. Carry drinking water for both of you and plan to finish what you brought. Bins are also scarce inside the reserve, so bring waste bags and carry them back out with you.

Worth knowing

Ticks are the genuine hazard here. Paralysis ticks are present in thick east-side Brisbane bushland, so check your dog over carefully when you get back to the car rather than leaving it until that evening. Give a wide berth to any wildlife you meet; a dog that reaches a koala or a blue-tongue does serious harm to both parties. Mosquitoes can be active near the gullies in the late afternoon.

Getting there and parking

The reserve runs off D'Arcy Road. Street parking sits at the end of Baguette Street or on Latina Avenue, and the Latina Avenue entrance is the straightforward start for the circuit. That trailhead is written up separately as the Latina Avenue trail head if you want the entry point details.

When to go

Early morning is the pick. The forest holds some shade through the day but a Brisbane summer afternoon makes even three kilometres hard work for a dog, and mornings also give you the best odds of hearing rather than startling the wildlife. After rain, expect slick gravel on the steeper sections and allow a slower pace.

Close by with the dogs

Once the circuit is done, Cab's Cafe over the boundary in Seven Hills is a handy dog-friendly coffee stop for the drive home. For a bigger outing with the same on-lead bushland feel, Whites Hill Reserve at Camp Hill has its own track network plus a fenced dog park in the corner.
