What visitors mention
Tuggeranong Hill Nature Reserve is a steep, elevated pocket of Canberra Nature Park in southern Canberra, reached from Theodore or Calwell. The payoff is the climb: fire trail and single track up to a hilltop with wide views over the Tuggeranong Valley and out to the Brindabellas. Dogs are welcome, but this is an on-leash reserve throughout.
The rules. Dogs must be on-lead at all times within the reserve, ideally on a lead no longer than 2 metres. The area is home to kangaroos, so keep your dog under close control to avoid any chasing, stick to the designated tracks, and pick up and carry out all waste. These are standard Canberra Nature Park conditions.
The walk. It is a genuine climb rather than a stroll. Wide fire trails carry the main route up the hill, crossed in places by narrower mountain-bike single track, so keep an eye out for riders and keep the lead short at intersections. It is popular with hikers and trail runners for the summit views.
What to bring. There are no taps, dog bowls or toilets in the reserve, so carry enough water for both you and your dog. In warmer months go early: the exposed climb offers little shade and heat builds fast on the hill.

Getting there. By car it is about 25 minutes from the city via the Tuggeranong Parkway or Monaro Highway, with the main steep entrance off Bugden Avenue in Theodore. Parking is limited, informal street parking near the end of Bugden Avenue, and the cul-de-sac fills quickly on weekend mornings. Buses run to Theodore and Calwell for a short walk to the entry points.
Nearby with the dog. Dog-friendly cafes in the neighbouring Tuggeranong suburbs, such as around Gowrie, are handy for a post-walk coffee, and the Calwell shops cover a quick takeaway stop.
Best mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday for peace, or early on a weekend before the trail runners and the parking fill up. Good for fit dogs and owners after a short, sharp climb with a view.
