Tuggeranong Hill Nature Reserve

Tuggeranong Hill Nature Reserve is a steep pocket of Canberra Nature Park on the southern edge of the city, reached from Theodore or Calwell, with fire trail and single track climbing to open hilltop views over the Tuggeranong Valley and out to the Brindabellas. Dogs are welcome, but this is an on-leash reserve from the car park to the summit.

The dog setup

ACT Parks requires dogs on-lead at all times here, ideally on a lead no longer than two metres, and the rules are enforced across all Canberra Nature Park reserves. Kangaroos are common on the hill, so close control matters as much as the law does, and waste comes out with you. Stick to the designated tracks; the reserve protects vulnerable habitat including the Pink-tailed Worm-lizard, which is why cutting switchbacks is a real problem rather than a shortcut.

The walk

This is a genuine climb, not a stroll. The summit track is roughly three kilometres return from the Theodore side, taking about an hour and a quarter up a steep, rocky management trail, while a longer base loop of around six kilometres circles the hill through grassy woodland. The summit pays you back with views over Lake Tuggeranong and the Namadgi ranges. Wide fire trails carry the main route, crossed in places by narrower mountain-bike single track, so keep the lead short at intersections and expect riders. It is popular with hikers and trail runners, especially on weekend mornings.

Max: kangaroos plus a steep, exposed climb means the lead stays short the whole way up. We turn back early when the heat builds, no summit is worth a cooked dog.

Water and hazards

There are no taps, bowls or toilets in the reserve, so carry enough water for both of you. The climb is exposed with little shade, and heat builds fast in the warmer months, which makes early starts non-negotiable through summer. The main wildlife issue is roos: a dog off lead chasing them risks injury to both animals and fines for you.

Getting there

It is about 25 minutes from the city via the Tuggeranong Parkway or Monaro Highway, with the main steep entrance off Bugden Avenue in Theodore and another trailhead near Callister Crescent. Parking is informal street parking near the end of the cul-de-sacs, and it fills quickly on weekend mornings. Buses run to Theodore and Calwell for a short walk to the entries.
