Winganna Farm

Winganna Farm is a 50-acre working family farm stay at 392 Rivulet Road, Peel, about 20 minutes from Bathurst along the Winburndale Rivulet. Guests stay in a historic 1854 cottage with the whole property to themselves, and the farm explicitly welcomes dogs, which sets it apart in a region where most rural properties shut the gate on visiting dogs.

Pets are allowed on request, so flag your dog when you book rather than arriving with a surprise, and confirm whether a charge applies. The owners have their own dogs on the property, and free-range chooks, goats, sheep, a donkey and a pig roam the farm, so your dog needs to be under control if it is not used to farm life. Pets should be vaccinated. A fenced separating area between the front and backyards is available if you need to keep your dog apart from the animals, though check the fencing yourself on day one rather than assuming it is escape-proof.

Max: The chooks are the test. If your dog has never met free-range poultry, keep the lead on until you know what you are working with, and use the fenced area while you find out.

The farm

The 1854-built cottage has three bedrooms, private bathrooms, air-conditioning and a balcony with garden and river views, plus a fully equipped modern kitchen, washing machine and free Wi-Fi. Outside there is a barbecue area and free private parking. Guests can feed the animals, fish, and in summer swim in the Winburndale Rivulet, which runs through the property. It suits dogs already comfortable around livestock; if your dog is the chasing type, arrive with a management plan rather than working it out on the day.

Bathurst is the nearest big town for supplies and a leg-stretch: Kefford St Off-Leash Dog Park is the fenced off-leash run, while Gunthers Lane Cafe and Cafe Viva both serve the dog-at-your-feet kind of coffee.
