Ophir Valley Cabins

Ophir Valley Cabins are secluded country cabins at 1606 Ophir Road, a 15 to 20 minute drive north of Orange towards the historic Ophir goldfields. Set on a 280-acre working farm bordered by bushland and nature reserves, it is a switch-off retreat that genuinely takes dogs, with kangaroos and wallabies as the daily neighbourhood.

The two-bedroom Apple Tree Cottage is the pet-friendly option, and well-behaved dogs stay indoors with you rather than in the car. Keep dogs leashed in shared and unfenced areas and confirm any pet fee or cleaning charge with the hosts at booking, since it varies by platform and cabin. Bring your own bowls, bedding and towels.

The non-negotiable is livestock. The property runs chickens, pigs, llamas and sheep, some fenced and some not, and wildlife moves through constantly. A dog that chases stock or kangaroos does not fit here, so supervision is not optional. The hosts are friendly and often hand out bread for feeding the farm animals, which is best done with the dog on a long-line on the deck.

The vibe

This is a quiet bush escape, not a resort: cabins with a working-farm feel, birdlife by day, and the historic Ophir Reserve nearby for gold-panning history and creek walks. The property borders Mullion Creek and Fourth Crossing reserves, which give quiet on-lead bushwalking straight from the door.

Getting there and parking

The cabins sit on Ophir Road north of Orange along a winding rural road; drive it carefully at dawn and dusk, when wildlife is on the move. Off-street parking is right by the cabin, and Orange's cafes and cellar doors are back down the road, 15 to 20 minutes away.

While you're out there

Into Orange, the Anzac Park Fenced Dog Park is the off-leash stop for a proper run, and Heifer Station Wines is a farm-set cellar door that suits the day's theme. Larder & Home in Lucknow is on the way for coffee.
