Gunn Point Campsite

Gunn Point is a wild, undeveloped camping and fishing peninsula roughly 45 to 60 minutes north of Darwin, where dogs are welcome off-leash on the beach and in the bush. The single defining fact: this is untamed coastal crocodile country with zero services, so you bring everything in and keep your dog well clear of the water.

The pet policy. Dogs are welcome on the peninsula and on Murrumujuk Beach. Off-leash is permitted, but your dog must be under control and managed responsibly at all times. It is strongly recommended that you tie up or secure your dog at the campsite overnight. Owners must clean up after their dog. Access is typically free, with no formal caravan park structure or per-dog fees - check the Gunn Point website for any recent management changes before you go.

The place and camping rules. This is informal, rustic camping in natural bushland along the coast and in the dunes - no numbered sites, no power, no facilities. Camping is not permitted directly on the beach or within 10 metres of the cliff edge. It is a well-regarded spot with a 4.4 rating from 89 reviews, popular for beach launching, 4WD beach driving (40 km/h speed limit on the sand), and shore-based fishing.

Getting there. Drive north from Darwin via Howard Springs Road, then Gunn Point Road. Some spots are accessible in a 2WD, but a 4WD is highly recommended for beach access, especially during the wet season. Three designated access tracks reach the beach - use only these tracks to prevent erosion. Parking areas are near the Tree Point Conservation Area turn-off.

Crocodiles and other watch-outs. This is the serious one. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit these waters, and a dog at the water's edge is a target. Your dog must not swim or walk near the water, particularly at dawn, dusk, or night. There are no bins, no water, no power, and no shops at the site. Bring everything in and take all rubbish out.

Nearby on the way back. Gunn Point itself has no services, so these options on the drive south are useful stops or fallbacks: Howard Springs Tavern for a meal, or BIG4 Howard Springs Holiday Park and Coolalinga Tourist Park if you want a serviced site with facilities.

Best timing. The dry season, May to October, is the time to go. Wet season conditions can be unsafe and access tracks degrade quickly. Good for experienced, self-sufficient dog owners with a reliable recall and the gear to camp properly off the grid.
