Howard Springs Tavern

Howard Springs Tavern, known to locals as the Howdy, is the rural community pub on Whitewood Road in Howard Springs, about half an hour south of Darwin. It is a straightforward bistro and beer garden operation, and dogs are welcome outside: on-lead, well behaved dogs can join you in the outdoor beer garden and terrace, while the bistro and gaming room stay off limits.

The dog setup

Most of the outdoor tables sit under shade, which matters in the Top End where midday heat is no joke for a dog in a coat. Staff can bring a water bowl on request, but carry your own given the climate. The beer garden is a flat, easy walk from the car park, so no long lead stretches across hot surfaces.

Worth knowing

The kitchen runs classic pub fare with a solid reputation for steaks and chicken schnitzels, and the tavern is a genuine locals' hub: trivia nights, live music and big screens for sport. There is a drive-through bottle shop and a courtesy bus running within a local 10km radius. This is a neighbourhood pub rather than a destination diner, which suits a relaxed dog-friendly meal.

Getting there and parking

The tavern is on Whitewood Road with a large free car park directly out front. It trades 10am to midnight, seven days a week, so there is plenty of window, though dinner and weekend evenings pull the trivia and meal-deal crowd.

Close by with the dogs

Howard Springs Nature Park is a few minutes' drive with leashed gravel-track walking (the swimming hole itself is off limits to dogs). The Temple Terrace Dog Park in Gray is the nearest fenced run, and if you are touring the region, BIG4 Howard Springs Holiday Park takes dogs in the same suburb.
