Bakewell Fenced Dog Park

Bakewell Fenced Dog Park is a fully fenced, off-leash reserve on Maurice Terrace in Bakewell, opened by Palmerston City Council in 2021 and known to some locals as the Maurice Terrace Dog Park. In the Territory heat, a secure grassy paddock minutes from home is a genuinely useful thing, and this one has the shade trees and water to back it up.

The dog setup

The whole point is the fence: dogs run off-leash inside the enclosed paddock, and you stay in the yard with them under voice control. There is a water fountain with bowls for dogs, some agility equipment to burn energy, shaded seating for owners, and a bag dispenser that is stocked when council keeps up with it.

Max: check the gate latch twice before you let your dog off the lead. The catch can be fiddly, and a dog through a half-closed gate onto Maurice Terrace is not a risk worth taking.

Worth knowing

The ground is open turf, so after a wet-season downpour it can turn muddy; stick to the shaded, elevated patches if it has recently rained. Standard Palmerston dog park etiquette applies: carry a lead, bag the mess, and leash up and leave if your dog is having a bad day with the local crowd.

Timing matters in the Top End. Go early morning or after 5pm; midday surfaces are hot enough to burn paw pads, and cane toads turn up around dusk, so keep dogs away from anything hopping in the grass at last light.

The park sits at 52 Maurice Terrace, Bakewell NT 0832, reached through the local Palmerston street grid, with free street parking beside it. A bus route runs through the suburb if you are walking in from a stop nearby. The park is open 24 hours.
