Grungle Downs

Grungle Downs is a tropical bed and breakfast on 5.5 acres of native gardens at 945 McMillans Road, Knuckey Lagoon, a few minutes' drive from central Darwin. The draw for dog owners is the fully self-contained cottage: pets are welcomed in that space specifically, so you get a whole private house with a verandah and garden rather than a room in the main lodge.

Dogs at the Grungle Downs

Pets stay in the Grungle Downs Cottage, not the main lodge rooms. The cottage has two queen beds plus a single, a separate lounge and dining area, a full kitchen with gas stove and full-sized fridge, and a long shaded private back verandah with outdoor dining and a BBQ. That self-contained layout means you control meals, routines and comings and goings without moving through shared guest spaces with a dog on the lead.

You must notify the property when booking that you are bringing a dog so the cottage can be allocated. Pet fees, size limits and any bond are not published, so ring +61 8 8947 4440 and confirm the cost and conditions before you commit. The garden setting suits dogs given prior notice, and the property expects them to be well behaved.

The vibe

Beyond the cottage there are four queen guest rooms in the main lodge, most with private entrances, plus a guest lounge, library, BBQ facilities and a 13-metre in-ground pool. Breakfast is served on the verandah. The block is planted out with tropical and native gardens, and bird life is a genuine feature rather than a marketing line, with more than 60 species recorded. It feels rural despite being close to Darwin's attractions.

Getting there and parking

The property sits just off McMillans Road, which links to Darwin's main arterials, and free on-site parking is available at the door. Knuckey Lagoon Recreation Reserve nearby gives you open space for leashed walks, and veterinary clinics in Palmerston are a short drive if you need one.

Close by with the dogs
