Healesville Apartments is a small block of self-contained apartments on Symons Street in Healesville, walking distance from the main strip, and it is one of the easier ways to keep a dog with you in the Yarra Valley. You get your own kitchen, balcony and garden space rather than a hotel corridor, and the pet terms are simple enough to plan a trip around.

Dogs at the apartments

Dogs of any size are allowed, typically one per booking, in designated pet-friendly apartments such as the Garden Apartment with its fenced yard. No pet fee is charged, though you must arrange the dog before arrival because not every unit takes pets. Food and water bowls are provided for canine guests. The one hard rule is supervision: dogs cannot be left unattended, so shape your cellar door days around the dog coming too or take turns. Cats and other pets are generally not allowed.

Max: no pet fee and a fenced garden is a rare combination in wine country. The trade is the no-unattended rule, so plan a dog-welcoming itinerary rather than leaving him behind for tastings.

Worth knowing

The apartments are set up for self-catering, with full kitchens, comfortable beds and a quiet garden feel across the units. Being in town matters with a dog: you can walk to Healesville's cafes and shops without moving the car, and the surrounding streets give you easy morning walks.

Getting there and parking

Healesville is just over an hour northeast of Melbourne via the Eastern Freeway and Maroondah Highway, and the apartments sit off Symons Street with off-street parking at your unit. The town centre, with its bakery, pubs and wine bar scene, is a short flat walk.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-lead run, the Healesville Showgrounds Dog Off Leash Area is minutes away, and dog-friendly cellar doors such as Payten & Jones make tasting workable with a dog in tow. For coffee, Cherry Tree Cafe is in town, and if the apartments are full, the BIG4 Yarra Valley Park Lane Holiday Park is the fallback.
