Brownhill Creek Tourist Park - Mitcham, South Australia

Brownhill Creek Tourist Park sits at 60 Brown Hill Creek Road in Mitcham, in the valley of Brownhill Creek Recreation Park about seven kilometres from the Adelaide CBD. It is a leafy, bush-style caravan and cabin park with old river red gums, a creek running through the setting and walking trails straight from the gate, which is a rare combination: a bush camping feel inside the metropolitan area.

Dogs at the park

Dogs are welcome, but at the manager's discretion and with the paperwork done first. Guests travelling with dogs need to complete the park's pet policy form before booking and declare the pet at that time rather than arriving with one. Dogs are permitted on the caravan and camping sites, and the park also designates some pet-friendly cabins; these are booked directly and depend on availability, so ask when you book. Guest reports suggest a pet fee in the order of $25 a night for pet-friendly cabin and site bookings, but confirm the current fee directly. Within the park, dogs are kept on a lead at all times and owners clean up after them.

The park itself

The park is set on bushland with a mix of powered and unpowered sites, ensuite sites, a camp kitchen, a BBQ area, a playground and a swimming pool, and regulars mention the resident alpacas. It reads as a quiet, family-run stopover more than a resort park, and the backdrop of the recreation park's red gums and creek line is the reason people come. Sites fill quickly in warmer months, so book ahead.

Getting there and parking

The park is just off the South Eastern Freeway side of Mitcham, around ten minutes' drive from the cafes of Hyde Park and fifteen from the Adelaide Hills. Parking is on site and free at your site or cabin.

Close by with the dogs

Mitcham dog park is roughly a ten-minute walk away for off-leash time, and Simpson Park's off-leash area is the other Mitcham option. Brownhill Creek Recreation Park next door is on-leash walking country, with marked trails along the creek. For coffee, Dark Horse on the Brit is a Mitcham cafe option on the way into town.
