Hannaford Park

Hannaford Park, which the council also lists as Hannaford Reserve, sits on Laffers Road in Belair under a stand of mature trees, and its fully fenced, gated off-leash area makes it one of the more secure dog parks in the Adelaide foothills. The Old Winery building from 1852 at the edge of the reserve tells you this has been a gathering spot a lot longer than the dog fence has been up.

The dog setup

The designated dog area is fenced with gated entry, so dogs can be off-lead the whole time they are inside it, provided you stay in the park, keep them in sight and hold effective voice control. The enclosure is open grass with shade from the established trees. Leashes go back on the moment you step out onto Laffers Road or the surrounding footpaths: the fence covers the park, not the streets. Waste bag dispensers and bins are provided, benches and picnic tables are scattered through the reserve, and a dual-level drinking fountain serves both ends of the lead, though it is worth carrying water as a backup.

The vibe

A quiet residential setting with a paved path along one side for pedestrians and cyclists. Weekend mornings and weekday afternoons after 4pm draw the regulars; weekday mid-mornings tend to be the calmest, which suits nervous dogs who want the space to themselves.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at 59 Laffers Road, Belair SA 5052, with free street parking along Laffers Road. It is a residential street, so parking tightens on weekends. Belair railway station is close by if you are arriving by train.

Make a day of it

The path beside the reserve runs toward the entrance of Belair National Park, and the Belair National Park Holiday Park nearby makes a base if you are staying over. For another fully enclosed option, the Upper Sturt Fenced Dog Park is a short drive into the hills, and The Little Leaf & Bean Cafe in Blackwood covers the coffee stop on the way home.
