Barossa 50s Diner

Barossa 50s Diner is a retro American diner at 119 Murray Street, right on Tanunda's walkable main street. Burgers, hot dogs, loaded fries, onion rings and thickshakes come out of a room decked out in 1950s styling and Betty Boop memorabilia, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables out front, so the dog gets to join the comfort food run.

The dog setup

Dogs sit with you in the outdoor seating area along Murray Street rather than inside the themed diner room. Use the front entrance to reach the outside tables, keep your dog leashed, and bring your own water bowl because one is not always on hand. It is walk-in service, so grab a free outdoor table and order at the counter.

Worth knowing

Reviewers rate the burgers, steak sandwich and thickshakes highly, and call out fresh ingredients and house-baked bread behind the hot dogs. Hours run Monday midday to 5pm, Wednesday to Friday to 8pm and weekends from late morning to 8pm, with Tuesday closed, so check the day before a midweek trip. The main street is lively on weekends, which is worth thinking about for a dog that likes calm.

Getting there and parking

There is free off-street parking plus street parking along Murray Street, though the strip gets busy at peak times and on weekends. Being in central Tanunda means you can walk in from most of town and skip the parking scramble entirely.

Make a day of it

The diner sits in the middle of wine country, and the Barossa's cellar doors are famously easy with dogs in their outdoor areas. Turkey Flat Vineyards is minutes away and welcomes dogs in its garden spaces, while Darlings Food With Passion and Rehn Bier Brewery cover the coffee and craft-beer ends of the same strip.
