Post Office Club Hotel

The Post Office Club Hotel is a restored 1871 pub at 306 St Kilda Road, on the corner of Inkerman Street, mixing traditional pub charm with a French brasserie menu. The dog draw is the leafy, vine-draped courtyard, which makes this one of the more handsome dog-friendly beer gardens in St Kilda.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard and beer garden, a spacious, step-free space under vine and umbrella cover with comfortable seating. Indoors is for people, so ask on arrival if you are unsure about the edges of that policy. Water bowls are typically available on request or set out in the courtyard, though a collapsible bowl is worth packing on hot days. On peak weekend sessions book ahead and note that you are bringing a dog.

Worth knowing

The kitchen has more range than the average pub: steak frites, pork belly, gnocchi and empanadas sit alongside a Sunday roast, and the beer list is serious. Inside there are open fireplaces and a vinyl DJ on Saturday nights, which is a people-side draw and another reason the courtyard is where the dog fits. The hotel trades from midday daily.

Getting there and parking

Trams run along St Kilda Road with stops near the corner of Inkerman Street, so public transport is easy. Metered street parking on St Kilda Road and the surrounding side streets fills quickly on weekends, so check the signage or arrive early.

Make a day of it

Albert Park Lake is a short walk away for an on-lead lap, and the Gasworks Arts Park Dog Off Leash Area at Albert Park gives dogs a proper run. Down the bay, the M.O. Moran Reserve Fenced Dog Park has a fully fenced, double-gated enclosure, and the St Kilda Beach Dog Off Leash Area adds sand and shallow water to the itinerary.
